Dancers of Crazy Horse Paris and surfers : discover our stars of the waves!

The troupe of “Forever Crazy” is currently touring Australia and Asia. Between two shows, three Crazy Girls are giving free rein to their second passion: surfing…

Waves, pleasure and discipline

More than a hobby, surfing is a true passion for some of the troupe’s dancers and in particular the volcanic Zitta Zurbaghan, Margaux La Chapelle and Bamby Splish Splash.

These three young women, at home in their skin and in their time, unveil their sublime bodies and their radiant femininity on stage, performing the legendary acts of the “Forever Crazy” show.  During the day, it is with a pleasure renewed each time that they rush into the ocean in search of the perfect wave, the one that will make them thrill with excitement.

Surfing is not improvised: this invigorating sport demands discipline, skill, and top physical fitness. But this is no worries for our naiads, who, like all the dancers of the troupe, rehearse for the show every day. This only means that they bring an extra grace and femininity in their practice of boardsports.

Meet our surfer dancers!

A California blonde with a luscious mouth, Margaux La Chapelle is a true enthusiast, always looking for a new challenge or a new adventure. Her greatest passion? Crazy Horse Paris, of course!

How is surfing an integral part of your Crazy Girl life?
I discovered this sport seven years ago and it changed my life. Ever since I’ve been part of the troupe, I’ve actually been able to practice it. In fact, I’ve had the good luck to go on tour with the show “Forever Crazy” and to be able to surf at the same time in so many different countries and incredible spots!

What are the sensations you are looking for in your surfing?
First of all, I love everything about surfing: the philosophy of life, the rhythm of life, discovering such exquisite spots, being in the water, not thinking about anything…Just riding, clearing my head.

I love the adventure that it brings; the challenge and the energy.

When I leave a session of surfing I feel emptied of any bad energy, calmed, invigorated, motivated for the rest of the day. I like this feeling of well-being, I feel good in my body and in my mind because I feel proud of myself.
Proud of getting myself back into the water, even very early in the morning, when it’s cold outside and inside, sometimes in the rain, after a long walk to get to the spot, before a rehearsal or a show.
Proud to have challenged myself and not to have been afraid despite that apprehension I always feel.

Zitta Zurbaghan is a talented artist (she is also a trapeze artist!) and a young woman with a stunning smile and a mane lightened by the sun and spray that goes down to her perfect waist. Cat-like on the stage of the Crazy Horse Paris in a solo like “Chain Gang“, she is equally at ease among the waves.

What is your happiest surfing memory?
My happiest memory is still the day we set out for a surfing adventure on the island of Taiwan. A beautiful black sand beach with some pretty stormy weather: that was a magical atmosphere!

We met a surf photographer on the beach, he came pretty regularly to take some fantastic pictures of us.

The last day before we left, he insisted on having us over for tea and to introduce us to his family. It was magical to be able to experience that moment with a local family.

What is your favorite spot?
Australia is by far one of the best spots for surfing. The landscape is crazy!

We are currently there during the winter period, which means that the water is cold but the atmosphere is sublime.

How is surfing an integral part of your Crazy Girl life?
Surfing is an integral part of my Crazy Girl life because there is this madness, this risk-taking that is totally “CRAZY”.

A veritable imp, Bamby Splish Splash lights up the stage with her sparkling glance and her brilliant smile. At the Crazy Horse Paris, the baby of the troupe not only found a vocation, but also friends for life.

Both a surfer and a Crazy Girl: is that possible?
Surfing has become an integral part of our Crazy Girls life… Thanks to our travels, it’s practically a daily activity. Surfing is a part of the rhythm of our touring life almost as much as the stage.  Surfing during the day and Crazy Horse Paris at night, it’s almost a double life, don’t you think?

What do you get out of it?
I’m constantly in search of well-being: Meditation and being in contact with nature are the main sources that give me balance.

Surfing allows me to have this privileged time to recharge my batteries. And then again, let’s not forget that it’s a demanding sport too! So twice the reason to get into it! Even for the daintiest among us!

Your happiest memory?
The first time I could get up and ride my first wave. The discovery of this sensation is still ingrained in my body. And the memory of seeing the bottom of the water from the top of my board at that moment. Unforgettable.

Frederick Wiseman, the internationally famous American documentary maker, goes behind the scenes of the creation of Désirs, the current show at the Parisian cabaret the Crazy Horse, which was inaugurated in September 2009.

Wiseman’s camera goes to the heart of this Parisian institution to record the creation of the new show, the most avant-garde of all Parisian cabarets.

Day by day and week by week, he follows the story of this amazing creation through its main characters : the legendary dancers such as Zula Zazou, Nooka Karamel, Fiamma Rosa, Loa Vahina etc., the stage managers and costume designers, plus Philippe Decouflé, the choreographer, and Ali Mahdavi, the show’s artistic director.

The Crazy Horse as never seen before

Through the eyes of Frederick Wiseman, we discover the Crazy Horse as never seen before – we explore its artistic language, its vision of modern woman and her legendary codes, and quite simply experience a magnificent human adventure.

« It’s an incredible honour for the Crazy Horse to be portrayed by Frederick Wiseman. He was a discreet and perceptive witness of our creative work, the frustrations and doubts, but also the excitement and joy involved in it… reinventing Crazy was a real challenge and Wiseman has managed to capture these historic moments with tenderness and discernment… Â» explains AndrĂ©e Deissenberg, Managing Director of the Crazy Horse.

Interested in fantasies

« Crazy Horse Â» is Frederick Wiseman’s 39th film. He gives his opinion on this unusual adventure. « I wanted to do this film for several reasons, mostly abstract ones. I’m very interested in fantasies, which are numerous and varied at Crazy: the fantasies of the public who come to see the show, the dancers who agree to perform nearly nude, the dreams of the shareholders who want to make money, and those of the director who has to show what Desire means… All these questions interested me. Â»

After Venice Days on 31 August, “Crazy Horse” has been selected for Toronto, San Sebastian, New York, Lisbon, London and Tokyo and has been released in cinemas across France on 5 October 2011.

Frederick Wiseman, america, film and documentary maker

The American film and documentary maker Frederick Wiseman has mainly concentrated on portraying large North American institutions. His films have been selected and have won prizes at many festivals all over the world, including Cannes, Venice and Berlin.

His 39th film is his third foray behind the scenes of a French institution, following his films on the Comédie Française and the Paris Ballet de l’Opéra.

The Crazy Horse Paris show is an extravaganza of iconic pieces performed with artistry and sensuality by our Crazy Girls. Philippe Beau: between shadow and light

Magic and shadow puppetry, ingredients of the fabulous cocktail served up by Philippe Beau. Virtuosity infused with poetry, his act is designed as a complete show in which story and performance are beautifully worked together. Without making a sound, he performs a veritable choreographed ballet, alternating majestic and delicate shadow creatures created by the fluid and expert movements of his hands.

Roman & Slava: amazing tap dancing

Twins, Ukrainian, virtuosi: Roman & Slava take the art of tap dancing to new heights. Classically trained, these amazing dancers perform a sparkling number, featuring perfect symmetry and incredible rhythm. Using contemporary numbers, the two brothers astound the audience and make them smile as well: a moment of pure happiness that’ll get you singing in the rain.

Artiste Robert Muraine Crazy Horse Paris Mark Davies

Mister Fantastic: humour and dance as total weapons

Robert Muraine has the right stage name: his number is truly fantastic. A contortionist and body popper, the precision and difficulty of each move is remarkable. Highly physical movements that he performs seemingly without effort and without losing his irresistible sense of humour. His quirky strip-tease made history at Crazy Horse Paris as part of the show “ Dessous Dessus”.

Just before the show, they welcome the audience in a festive and glamorous way: burlesque artists in their own right, they share a certain vision of their mission as master of ceremonies. Zoom on the grace and fantasy of Laurie Hagen, who offers a nice interlude to Totally Crazy!

Tell us where your love of performing comes from…

Right from when I was a little girl, I went with my mother to her tap class. I nagged her for a pair of those special shoes until she bought me some! That’s when dance and performing became part of my life. I took classes at the Antwerp Royal Ballet School and I watched all the musicals I could, on video and live in London, always with my mother. When they saw how passionate I was, my parents let me leave home for the Arts Educational School in London, where I was a student for 3 years.

How did burlesque become part of your life?

It took a while, because my first job was as a dancer in Beauty and the Beast as a plate and a napkin. I had an injury, so I went back to college to work on my acting: in one piece, I played a showgirl and I went to see some burlesque shows while I was working on the role. And they were just wonderful: I loved the freedom and imagination of the performers and I knew that’s what I wanted to do! So I did the Polly Rae burlesque training, really enjoyed it… three weeks later, I had an audition and joined her company.

What attracts you to cabaret?

I like the fact that I can be a unique character composed of what I have to offer as a performer and being able to make all the decisions myself, whether it’s the design, the music, the choreography… And the atmosphere is magical, it’s a celebration and not a competition.

Who’s the Laurie Hagen we see on stage?

Being on stage brings out the extrovert in me. I feel powerful, like I wish I could be in everyday life, because I’m actually quite shy. My character is a bit crazy and extravagant, mainly because of my enormous wig which has a life all of its own.

Did you ever dream about Crazy Horse Paris?

Oh yes, it’s a real privilege to be the one welcoming the audience and putting them at ease before the show! That’s how I see my job: making sure that everyone watching is relaxed and ready to enjoy the show. I try to make them feel involved, because it’s really important for the Crazy Girls, fantastic performers that they are, to feel the audience’s reactions and emotions. So I get in among the tables, I talk to people, ask them questions, I might sit on someone’s lap, I take charge a little bit and that creates a sense of co-conspiracy and warmth that audiences love.

What do you have in common with the Crazy Girls?

Well, physically, not much because I’m only 5ft 2. They seem like an unattainable ideal: dazzling, free and sensual. What we do have in common is our unique way of expressing ourselves on stage and our sense of humour: the Crazy Girls are incredible dancers, but they’re also actors, you can see it. They are untouchable, even though they touch the whole world.

“Laurie is an outstanding MC, she speaks several languages, she’s funny. She’s audacious and she’s a super singer!”

Andrée Deissenberg, Chief Creative Officer
